2016 Open House Information for Programs and Departments

Graduate and Professional School Open House

November 12, 2016
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Rutgers Student Center

The Graduate and Professional School Open House is our annual opportunity to showcase Rutgers graduate programs. Because this event features only Rutgers programs, prospective students will attend to learn specifically about your department.

Promoting your participation

Be sure to let your prospective applicants know you will be there on November 12th!

Post it!

The vast majority of last year's attendees learned of the event via a Rutgers website. Below is a web button and sample text you can use on your department's website to promote your presence at the open house.

Set-up

Please plan to arrive at 9 a.m. to set up your display. All tables should be set up by 9:45 a.m. Last year, students were waiting to enter the venue 20 minutes before the event start time!

Each department will be supplied a standing sign with the program name. We suggest that you bring your own tablecloth. Two chairs will be provided per table. Unfortunately, additional chairs are not available.

Please note that we are not permitted to attach any display materials to the walls of the Rutgers Student Center.

Limited electrical service is available in the open house space; please call 848-932-7711 if you will need access to outlets.

A printed nametag will be supplied for each individual from your department registered for the event. Please be sure to contact the Graduate Admissions office with the names and titles of those who will be attending.

Food

There will be no food served to open house staffers, but the student center food court is easily accessible downstairs from the multi-purpose room.

Tips for open house staffers

Offer something beyond the website

Many prospective students who attended the open house last year had already visited the Graduate Admissions website and/or the departmental website. Whether your program will be sending faculty, staff, or graduate students, each individual should be able to draw upon personal knowledge of the department to share with potential applicants.

Perhaps a faculty member can speak about his or her current research or opportunities for graduate students within centers affiliated with the program. Staff members can offer insight about the department's specific review process and how it is most effective to communicate with potential faculty mentors. Graduate students can talk about their day-to-day experience in the program, the sense of community within the program, etc.

Have something to hand out

Do you have a departmental brochure? A flyer for an upcoming event or lecture? A program from a recent awards luncheon? Bring them along!

If you have business cards, distribute them and remind your potential students to reference the fact that they met you at the open house in future correspondence.

Giveaways such as pens are popular and a bowl of candy/mints on your table never fails to attract interest at a graduate school fair.
