Program Requirements
For nondegree: Students will be permitted to take a total of 12 credits before they must apply to the program for matriculation. Application fee, personal statement, and transcripts must be submitted in order to be considered for nondegree study in English.
Test Requirements
Applicants must submit a Personal Statement, 3 recommendation letters, transcripts, and academic writing sample (7-10 pages, demonstrating skills in literary research and analysis, preferably with some use of critical theory). Rutgers University-Newark accepts the Duolingo English Test. The Duolingo English Test is an online English language proficiency test that can be taken via a camera-enabled computer. When you receive your results, you can share your scores with Rutgers-Newark. The minimum Duolingo score is 115.
Personal Statement Instructions
We look for evidence of the applicant's interests in literary study, breadth and depth of his/her knowledge of literature, and readiness for graduate-level work. Please see the English Department website document, "How to Apply," for an advisory with more details.
