Program Requirements

Three (3) letters of recommendation, personal statement, official transcripts, CV/resume, and academic writing sample.

Test Requirements

Results from a GRE can be optionally submitted. Rutgers University-Newark accepts the Duolingo English Test. The Duolingo English Test is an online English language proficiency test that can be taken via a camera-enabled computer. When you receive your results, you can share your scores with Rutgers-Newark. The minimum Duolingo score is 130.

Personal Statement Instructions

Please submit a statement of your academic and professional goals, no more than three pages. Your statement should address the following questions:

1. Why do you want a PhD in criminal justice? What are your intended research interests? What career path do you have in mind that requires a PhD in criminal justice?

2. Why do you want to pursue your PhD at Rutgers? What faculty members are conducting research that interests you?

3. What relevant academic, research, or work experience makes you qualified to be a researcher?

4. Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
