Program Requirements

There are two applications for MA and PhD applicants.

The first is the Rutgers University Application due by December 1 (Composition) and December 15 (Music Theory and Musicology). Personal statement, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, TOEFL scores (international applicants), and GRE (optional) are required as a part of the university application.

Five business days after submitting the university application, all applicants will be emailed a link to complete the Mason Gross supplemental application. The Mason Gross supplemental application is due on December 15 (Composition) and January 15 (Music Theory and Musicology). The supplemental application requires an additional $75 music evaluation. Composition applicants must submit a portfolio of original work via the supplemental application. Musicology and Music Theory applicants will submit research or analytic papers/graphs and a writing sample as part of the supplemental application. PhD: The GRE General test is optional for PhD applicants. MA: The GRE General test is optional for MA applicants.

For MM. AD and DMA programs, apply to Music (performance, music education) in Mason Gross School of the Arts.

All applicants to the Performance, Music Education, Theory, Musicology, and Composition Programs are required to submit a separate $75.00 non-refundable file evaluation fee to the Music Department as a part of the supplemental application.
